I couldn’t sleep so I want to let this out of my head.
A couple of weeks back a good friend of mine coined (or at least I think he did) this phrase: Monday Blues is For Losers. Immediately, it was a blast! I made a poster out of it that was downloaded and used in a lot of places, my office cubicle included.
For some, this is impossible, and one even said young people feel tired on Mondays (out of partying all weekend) while old people are rejuvenated (less partying).
I don’t care. This phrase rocks!
In fact, I’m going to share with you my way of looking forward to coming to work every single day, and yes, including Mondays.
Love your work (or find work you love)
One of the biggest reason of dreading to go to work is you’re not enjoying the work you’re doing. I guess that’s how the system works, or else why else do they need to pay you. But some lucky people have found their love. It’s either the work environment, or the work itself. Once you do, focus on that love, and build upon it.
Even if the sole thing you like about going to work is the coffee is free, build upon that. From enjoying the free coffee, you can enlarge it to encompass the whole excitement of chatting on some gossip in the pantry (while making coffee), and the smell of the splendid cup of coffee while you drill your way into the day’s work.
Find a target
If it’s so hard to like the work, then find a target to be excited about. To see that cute colleague or the trip to the delicious restaurant during lunch. Similar to the example I’ve set above, this takes your mind off the negative part of the job, and keep you on the edge for the next chance to lay your eyes on the cute colleague or sipping on the delicious coffee.
Be jovial (even at the expense of others)
Jokes are the best way to break into peoples heart, even your own. Jokes break barriers, and make other people enjoy your company. Once you’ve set the tone that you’re a joker, even saying bad things about them can seem funny. Heck, funny people can make indecent jokes without being slapped with a sexual harassment suit, but if you’re not a funny man, then sayonara, career.
Of course, there are lines that you should not cross. The lines differ in different situations, so be observant to people surrounding you when making these jokes.
Rest
The real reason why Monday is so dreaded, is that many did not have enough rest during the weekend. The body needs more than just a night’s sleep. The mind needs to recalibrate itself. Even life needs some rest. So have plenty of it, but still, do enjoy life.
Read Dilbert
Dilbert is the brain child of Scott Adams, the only one cartoonist that I know that have been called a genius (a documentary series in Discovery made a documentary about him, alongside Einstein, Newton and Hawkings). Dilbert is originally a syndicated comic strip, that tells the (exaggerated, but mostly true) stories of working in a cubicle.
These comics have also being compiled into several books. One of the book that’s most suitable for Monday blues and the likes are The Joy of Life. Basically it teaches you how to really enjoy life while working in a boring, lifeless environment like the office.
That’s some of the things that I do to make sure I’m not moody or bored during work. While there are times when my problems (both personal and professional) issues is too big for these measures, but the other 99 percent I’m at least smiling from the bottom of my heart.
