Note: This was written in a Facebook post way back in May, on the day Xbox One was launched. It has been copied in an email/post to Astro and TM, but no response as of date.
Xbox One has been launched yesterday, with the ambition to combine and simplify the gaming, entertainment and TV home setup. I hope TM Unifi and Microsoft Malaysia could take advantage of this to promote it’s own high-speed internet, VOD and live tv with Xbox One.
My idea is to have a Unifi package that bundles an Xbox One, with subscriptions to Unifi and HyppTV using the Xbox One, with Xbox Live account within a single account and bill.
Xbox Live Gold is about RM15 (edit: a commenter has mentioned that this might be up to RM49) a month. but its not widely used in Malaysia, most probably because it’s not used by many Xbox users (especially with hacked units). this can be combined with Unifi’s offering, either as an add on, or a whole new package entirely (with subsidized units and up to 2 years contract.)
the reason I’m saying Unifi instead of Astro is that Unifi already have the infrastructure laid out, just not the plans and contents, which explains the lackluster HyppTV performance. Astro Malaysia could very well do the same but they will need to expand their fiber-optic coverage outside of Time’s infrastructure, which currently is limited to certain buildings and condos. (edit: Astro has recently teamed up with Maxis to offer a bundle package with Maxis Fiber.)
But hey, with a one box for all like this, Microsoft could make strides in Malaysia’s home entertainment industry with just one swoop.
what do you think?
— Fast forward to today–
Recently, Time Warner has announced that it will be using Xbox One as an optional replacement for its set-top box. which means, less clutter, more content, and having Xbox One becomes more relevant in the living room.
